NYC Comptroller Stringer wants renewable energy option for Gowanus power plant

New York should pull the plug on a power plant project in Brooklyn, says city Comptroller Scott Stringer.

He called on the state agency responsible for electric facilities to reject the Astoria Generating Company’s plans to replace old units at a plant in Gowanus, Brooklyn, with natural gas units.

The plan is “directly incompatible with our emissions goals, the wellbeing of our local communities and our progress towards a more sustainable future,” Stringer wrote Michelle Phillips, secretary of the NYS Board on Electric Generation Siting and the Environment, on Wednesday.

“Rather than reinforcing the fossil fuel status quo, it is now past time to overhaul our energy infrastructure … with renewable and battery-powered solutions that generate both reliable power and good jobs,” Stringer wrote.
